Jacob Berry is drafted and selected sixth overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. “Everything is unreal,” Berry exclaimed.
“As a child, you fantasize about this moment. I’ve been fantasizing about being at a big league field and playing in a big league park since I first started playing baseball.”
He is making his family and Arizona proud of himself.
Who Are Jacob Berry’s Parents?
Jacob Berry is born to his parent, Perry and Lana Berry on May 5, 2001. His parents are extremely proud of their son became a hot commodity in the MLB Draft.
“I was telling my wife the other day how amusing it is to see,” Perry stated. “We couldn’t even find a team willing to take this kid, and now he’s a first-round draft selection.”
The Miami Marlins selected Berry sixth overall earlier this week. On Thursday, the Tucson, Arizona native formally signed terms with the Florida team.
He will receive a $6 million signing bonus, which is slightly less than the $6.03 million given to players selected in his position. The payment will certainly benefit Berry, but it will also make Miami extremely pleased.
Since the former LSU third baseman signed for less than slot value, the leftover $30,000 can go to another Marlins draft selection.
Berry brings a great deal of versatility to the table, which is a key asset for any MLB team. Due to his positional versatility and outstanding hitting skills, the Marlins were ready to move early in the first round to grab the switch hitter.
Berry hit.370/.464/.630 for the Tigers this season, with 15 home runs thrown in for good measure.
Despite missing time due to injury, he and Dylan Crews almost led LSU to a Super Regionals berth in Johnson’s first year as head coach. Unfortunately, the Tigers were defeated by Southern Mississippi in the Hattiesburg Regional during a winner-take-all battle.
Berry was one of four former LSU players picked earlier this week. Cade Doughty, Paul Gervase, and Eric Reyzelman will join him in the lower leagues.
Meet Jacob Berry’s Father Perry & Mother, Lana Berry
Jacob Berry grew up in a Phoenix neighborhood called Queen Creek, Arizona as the oldest of four children of Perry and Lana Berry. He has enjoyed baseball and softball since a young age.
Perry Berry, Berry’s father, was chosen by the Houston Astros in 1990 and spent four years in the minor leagues.
His father had a huge effect on his children’s lives, and one of the easiest methods was to take Jacob and his family to Diamondbacks games.
“I remember watching Paul Goldschmidt as a kid,” Jacob said. “The way he played the game was incredible.” A terrific character that plays the game and does everything correctly. That is how I approach my game and how I want to play.”
When Jacob wasn’t watching sports at Chase Field, he was working alongside his father, a seasoned veteran. Perry was taken in the fourth round of the 1990 MLB draft after four outstanding seasons as an infielder at UL-Lafayette.
He played four years in the lower levels but never made it to the big leagues. Since then, he has served as the Queen Creek County School Superintendent in the Arizona public school system.
As a part of the school, he has been intimately involved in his son’s development as a player and a person. Jacob praised his father, saying, “He’s been my biggest supporter in everything: baseball, school, and life.”
One of the first things he taught his kid on the field was how to switch hit, which is a talent that most players don’t master until much later in their careers.
“He was a decent player, I felt, and he taught me both styles. I’ve simply been doing it for a long time, and it’s been working out well for me,” he stated.
