Tony Coe obituary

Anthony George Coe, an English jazz musician who played the clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, was born on November 29, 1934, and passed away on March 16, 2023. He enlisted in the army in 1953 at the age of 18, serving as a clarinetist in the military band and a saxophonist in the unit dance band.

He briefly played with the Micky Bryan Band (Micky on piano, Gerry Salisbury on valve trombone, Harry Bryan on trumpet, Lennie Hastings on drums, and Coe on clarinet) in France after being demobbed in 1955 before reuniting with Joe Daniels. Tony spent slightly over four years with Humphrey Lyttelton’s band from 1957 to the end of 1961 as a result of Tony’s father seeing Humphrey Lyttelton in 1957.
