The company was founded by Lee Byung-Chul in 1938 as a trading company. However, after thirty years, the group diversified into other areas such as food processing, retail, textiles, insurance, and securities.
Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s. The company also went into the construction and shipbuilding industries in the mid-1970s. This diversification has driven its subsequent growth.
In 1947, another business mogul, Cho Hong-Jai, the founder of the Hyosung group’s joined Lee in investing in a new company called Samsung Mulsan Gongsa, or the Samsung Trading Corporation.
This new trading firm grew to become the present-day Samsung C&T Corporation, this is although the two men separated after a few years due to differences in management style. Cho Hong-Jai wanted a 30 equity share. Samsung Group was separated into Samsung Group, Hyosung Group, Hankook Tire and others

The first product of Samsung electronics was a black-and-white television set.
After the founder’s (Lee Byung-Chul) death in 1987, Samsung was broken up into four business groups. These are Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group, CJ Group and Hansol Group.
Since 1990, Samsung has increasingly grown to be a global brand, its activities and electronics. Samsung Electronics include mobile phones and semiconductors; these have become the company’s most important source of income.
In 2017, Samsung was ranked the company with the 6th highest global brand value.

- Samsung Electronics. This is regarded as the world’s largest information technology company and chipmaker and consumer electronics maker measured by 2017 revenues),
- Samsung Heavy Industries- This is the 2nd largest shipbuilder in the world, measured by revenue in 2010
- Samsung Engineering and Samsung C&T- These are regarded as the 13th and 36th largest construction companies in the world. Samsung Engineering majors in the construction of oil refining plants, power plants and other infrastructure.
- Other prominent subsidiaries include Samsung Life Insurance- the 14th largest life insurance company in the world),
- Samsung Everland- This is the operator of Everland Resort and Cheil Worldwide. These are the oldest theme park in South Korea and 1 5th largest advertising agency in the world respectively.
Samsung has a powerful influence on South Korea’s economic, political, cultural and media development. It is reported that Samsung’s affiliate companies produce around a fifth of South Korea’s total exports. The company’s revenue is equal to 17% of South Korea’s $1,082 billion Gross Domestic Product.
Samsung Electronics
In the first quarter of the year 2012, Samsung was the world’s largest mobile phone maker by unit sales with a global market share of 25.4%. The company was also the world’s second-largest semiconductor maker according to 2011 revenues. Samsung Electronics is listed on the Korea Exchange stock-exchange with number 005930).
