Richard Portnow Sopranos
The Sopranos is an American crime drama television series created by David Chase. The story revolves around Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), a New Jersey-based Italian-American mobster, and portrays the difficulties that he faces as he tries to balance his family life with his role as the leader of a criminal organization.
These are explored during his therapy sessions with psychiatrist Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco). The series features Tony’s family members, mafia colleagues, and rivals in prominent roles—most notably his wife, Carmela (Edie Falco), and his protégé/distant cousin, Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli).

Richard Portnow Sister Act
Sister Act is a 1992 American musical comedy film directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Joseph Howard, with musical arrangements by Marc Shaiman. It stars Whoopi Goldberg as a lounge singer forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. It also features Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Mary Wickes, and Harvey Keitel.

Richard Portnow Good Morning Vietnam
Good Morning, Vietnam is a 1987 American comedy-drama war film written by Mitch Markowitz and directed by Barry Levinson. Set in Saigon in 1965, during the Vietnam War, the film stars Robin Williams as a radio DJ on Armed Forces Radio Service, who proves hugely popular with the troops, but infuriates his superiors with what they call his “irreverent tendency”. The story is loosely based on the experiences of AFRS radio DJ Adrian Cronauer.
Most of Williams’ performances that portrayed Cronauer’s radio broadcasts were improvisations. The film was a critical and commercial success; for his work in the film, Williams won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film is number 100 on the list of the “American Film Institute’s 100 Funniest American Movies”.

Interview: Actors Richard Portnow and Juney Smith (Good Morning, Vietnam!)
Actor Richard Portnow knows that 25 years is a long time.“When you are an actor and you have been fortunate enough to have a long career, as I have, looking back at a movie that you had done 25 years ago is a little unsettling,” says Portnow, noting that he has less hair and more weight now than he did a couple of dozen years ago. “And there are films that I did 25 years ago that are not good. Those are painful to watch. But watching ‘Good Morning, Vietnam!’ is a real treat.”
In “Good Morning, Vietnam!,” Robin Williams portrays Adrian Cronauer, a disc jockey who in 1965 Saigon turns Armed Forces Radio on its ear with his irreverent brand of humor. Portnow plays one of the supporting characters. The comedy was originally released in 1987, making this year its 25th anniversary – the perfect opportunity for Buena Vista Home Entertainment to make the movie available on Blu-ray.
Portnow credits “Good Morning, Vietnam!’s” staying power partly to the fact that the film is so funny and partly to the timing. The actor explains that Bangkok was still a very wide open town during production. Moreover, he notes that Southeast Asia is always exciting to look at and experience. Of course, he admits that Williams helped, as well. Portnow’s costar Juney Smith agrees.
“The word genius exists for a reason,” Smith says. “Somebody has got to accomplish it. [Robin Williams] did that. I knew that [‘Good Morning, Vietnam!’] would resonate with people because the script had solid humor based on a real dramatic situation and a real person. Great writing, great directing and great acting – all of the elements were there. It was a really wonderful thing.”
Portnow adds that “Good Morning, Vietnam!’s” director Barry Levinson aided in Williams’s genius. He explains that the filmmaker tends to refrain from calling cut when a scene as written is finished being played out. Instead, he lets the camera roll, thereby opening up the possibilities that his actors might engender. Having said that, the actor looks back on the experience with nothing but joy.
“It was the most exciting I thing I have ever done,” Portnow says. “I did not even know where Bangkok was when I got the call. An extreme location can be a real dream job because it is some place that you are unlikely to ever go to. I never would have gone to Thailand but I was traveling first class and being paid to do a terrific film and spend three months in the country. It was incredible.”
Moreover, Portnow credits “Good Morning, Vietnam!” with teaching him to not lock himself into a role before arriving on a set. That is because the character he ended up playing – Dan “The Man” Levitan – was not the one that he had prepared for thanks to a conflict in his schedule and some last-minute cast shuffling as a result. However, instead of allowing insecurity to overwhelm him, the actor used it to create the character.
“That is how I came up with stumbling and tripping over my words and mispronouncing things,” Portnow explains. “It was something I had never experienced before and as a result of working on that film I learned to open myself up to whatever was put in front of me and let the character live and breathe with the input that I could find on set and from my other actors.”
Meanwhile, Smith claims “Good Morning, Vietnam!” encouraged him to believe that he was a real actor. Of course, he also appreciated the opportunity to spend some time in Thailand and experience another culture, which he believes gave him a greater understanding of the scope of the world and where he fits into it.
“Good Morning, Vietnam!” (R – 121 minutes) is now available on Blu-ray at retail stores and rental outlets throughout the Valley.
